Overview
The time between World War I and World War II was a very interesting time in Germany and mainly Berlin. After a long World War I, Germany began to start their recovery and Berlin was the center of this resurgence. Berlin became the center of attention during this time with the rise of the German Republic and other "political" parties. Berlin truly came into relevance, with the rise of many powerful people, religion, and many events are going to take place that will shape not only Berlin but the rest of Europe.
A population boom occurred in Berlin almost overnight, where the city's population became almost 3.8 million instantly. This caused a lot of problems in Berlin during this time. There were about 235,000 people without jobs, and riots occurred everyday. After a few years this problem began to fix itself with the introduction of the new currency, and the Dawes Plan. This plan limited the payments imposed on Germany as a whole because of the result of World War I, which consequently affected Berlin a lot.
A huge rising during this time was a rise in artistic and cultural development. There was a creative boom during this time which caused many people to try new things. This movement led to the establishment of some very important things that are relevant in the world today. In 1931 Berlin was the center of German technology, in which the first radio broadcast hit the air waves. Not too long after did the first TV world premiere come to be. This was causing Berlin to become relevant to the world. However, this all came to and end when the US market crashed and led to a world-wide depression. This affected Berlin drastically and led to millions of people losing jobs. The more important factor because of this was the uprising of a terrible power in Berlin, that would become the most powerful person during this century.
A power struggle began to rise in Europe, with every country wanting control after the devastation caused by World War I. Germany was the exact same way, and Berlin was the center of this power struggle. An Austrian names Adolf Hitler was beginning to campaign his radical ideals in Berlin during this time. He ran for office in 1930 and only gained 18% of the national vote. He realized that he need to take Berlin and influence the people there his ideals were the right things to fix the country. Hitler wasn't elected leader of Germany but soon after was appointed into a very high position of power. Hitler began to spread his ideals throughout the city knowing that once he took control over Berlin the rest of Germany would follow. Hitler finally got power when he accused the communists for a fire that broke out at Reichstag. He was given "emergency power" and never gave it back. Berlin was in a lot of trouble once Hitler came into power, he killed thousands of people within Berlin if you didn't join or agree with his ideals. Hitler created concentration camps just north of Berlin that millions of Jews were sent to, thus destroying the population of Berlin and its economy. Hitler sought to gain control of all of Europe using Berlin as his center and expanding outwards. The Olympics were being held in 1936 in Berlin, which would come to cause a problem. Hitler would use this Olympic Games to distract the world from what terror he was causing in Europe at the time. Berlin was under complete control, and there was only one thing that could fix this problem: World War II (Daughton).
